Dean was born in Northern Ireland, where he directed his first show aged 12, in a small theatre in Belfast, and continued to follow this passion throughout his childhood, before studying at The Guildford School of Acting.

Dean's career has seen a number of works, over a broad range of material including Godspell, featuring Ramin Karimloo, Kerry Ellis and George Maguire, for which Dean was nominated for the Broadwayworld.com Award for Best Director of a Musical in the West End 2016. This production was revived in 2019 featuring Rachel John, Luke Bayer, Max Bowden, Laura Baldwin and the returning Ramin Karimloo. 

Dean is also a passionate advocate of new work, directing productions of new musicals such as Paperboy (Lyric Theatre, Belfast) and Patterns (Landor Theatre)

His other credits as a theatre director include Dogfight (Southwark Playhouse), Spring Awakening (Stockwell Playhouse), In The Heights (Stockwell Playhouse, Irish Premieres of Pippin + Into The Woods in Belfast, and productions of Sweeney Todd, Dorian Grey in London. 

 

Dean also served as Associate Director on 13 (Ambassadors Theatre, West End 2017), Annie (Arts Theatre, West End 2015), and as associate on productions of Rent and Chess with Steven Dexter at the Union Theatre and Ivy Arts Centre.
